Our History

52 years ago, leaders of Wesley Memorial envisioned a preschool ministry to occur on weekdays as well as in Sunday School. They wished to provide opportunities for young children to grow socially, emotionally, physically and mentally. They wished to nurture children with Christian attitudes and values based on Jesus’ teachings. Plans included a safe environment that would be stimulating, positive, and very hands-on! Wesley Memorial preschool would welcome children to “Learn To Love and Love To Learn.”

In the fall of 1963, the Through-The-Week (now Wesley Memorial School) program was ready to open! It began with just one class group of 20 five-year Kindergartners and 2 teachers. Over the years, our ministry has certainly grown! We are proud to enroll 200 children yearly. We are also proud of our dedicated staff of 30 teachers, plus a full-time Director and Associate Director. In addition to our Kindergarten-Fives, the school expanded over time to include our current programs for Infants, Toddlers, Twos, Threes, and Fours.

Our Wesley Memorial School maintains high quality though guidance from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Our school is accredited by the Standing Committee on Childcare for our Western NC Conference of the United Methodist Church. This W.I.S.E. Award accreditation is specific to faith-based weekday programs that have proven to be “Wonderfully In Search Of Excellence.”

Across the years the Wesley Memorial School has been an outreach to the community as a witness of Jesus’ message “Let the children come -- do not hinder them.”It is truly exciting to see our second generation! Many parents who grew up attending Wesley Memorial’s preschool – and who remember and acknowledge the loving, positive feelings they experienced here – are now returning to bring their own children to Wesley Memorial School!

“And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom, and the favor of God was upon him.” ~ Luke 2:52
